Super Mario Shiny Graphics

Post  Nintendium on 10/23/2015, 12:48 am

I see the games like Unnamed Zelda for Wii U and, for a more retro example, Super Mario Bros. 1 and 2 All Star remakes. What makes these graphics look realistic and not like the sprites from Mega Man? I realized it is due to the colorful outlined style where it is not always black outlines like a 2D cartoon. So, I blend the colors together to create a palette instead of using black as the final color in these sprites. They are modified from Hello Engine's sprites and may be a full replacement for the premade graphics one day (well, I may need a while for characters like Mario, Bowser, Larry Koopa, etc. so not going fast Sonic (STH-MS)  Razz). Enjoy the album with much of what I have done so far.

Does anyone want the tutorial of how to do this? I can show you how!

Thank you! So kind! Should I make a complete makeover of Hello Engine?

If you want to make the sprites come into SM2DU, then make new sprites of new things, if you are doing to train sprite editing then continues Wink

It's not. People complains of Hello Engine having SMA4 sprites, and needs a new style. Hello says that he cannot change it because there's not enough sprites in another style. Well, here it is, with a different sprites.

If is for that, ok! Your sprite remake style looks a bit like emulators filters Pac-Man

It can't be done with any filter I am aware of.

Do you think an entire game with this style would work or would it get tiresome to look at?

Well, they're fine, but you need to improve , as they are just simple recolors

Thank you for your feedback. I guess so, but they are not that easy, because one has to recolor each section by hand and not just using paint bucket. For example, in sprites with many colors, such as Mario, it is necessary to judge which of the sprite's elements is in front of the rest in order to put the outline of the frontmost element in front. This has to be accomplished with pencil tool instead of paint bucket. In addition, this project was designed to make sprites not looking so yucky when using filters like hq2x or interpolation of game window. The black outlines give a cartoon feel, but they work because they are thin. When it comes to filters, it used to be that sprites' black outlines were enlarged as well, so it was more obvious that the sprites were enlarged and the art style does not look as clean anymore. It is still sort of the case with the new colorful outlines, but it now looks more like an oil painting if a blending filter is used. If you have seen previews of new Zelda game for Wii U, I was trying to make it sort of look like that, where no object has black outlines and object is only comprised of colors it has, with additional lighting. In addition, it was designed to have an easy process that could be applied to any sprite, because the Hello Engine has very many sprites. So I am admitting that this is somewhat easy, but don't discount it, because it is still difficult to do to so many colorful sprites, such as Mario, Bowser, Larry, etc. It is difficult in the sense of the entire project. I hope you understand what I am meaning and that you like what I continue to do.

A new album has been posted showing most current state of how the sprites are. It especially shows how things with white in them like coins and Charging Chuck have had their coloring improved.
